style Summer’s the time for shades; pedicure trends By Ashley Trunko Sunny weather calls for stylish shades in all sizes, shapes and colors. To find a virtually one-of-a-kind piece, your best bet is the past: Flower Child (11508 Clifton Boulevard, Cleveland; 216-939-9933 or www.flowerchildretro.com) offers a variety of unique styles from the 1950s through 1980s. Try a mod or op art style for cool 1960s chic, or go Marilyn with delicate detailed cat eyes. For the ultimate statement, oversized shades like these sparkling Nina Ricca sunglasses will definitely turn heads.
Renee Starvaggi, a nail specialist at the Spa at Yellow Creek (3636 Yellow Creek Road, Akron; 330-665-2555 or www.yellowcreekspa.com), gives a few tips on how to maintain perfectly pedicured feet this summer. Exfoliate at least once a week to keep feet soft and smooth. Starvaggi recommends Deborah Lippmann Soul Mission Heat Activator and Scrub in grapefruit or Red Flower Lemon Coffee Olive Stone Scrub. Deborach Lippmann also offers a Get Off Callus Eliminator, which can be used as a follow-up to exfoliation. Spray this product on and, after letting it soak in, use a foot file to minimize calluses. For at-home pedicures, be sure to remove all natural oils from your nails before applying polish. Starvaggi likes Deborah Lippmann 2 Second Nail Primer. After polishing, apply a topcoat every few days in order to maintain your pedicure. Deborah Lippmann On a Clear Day not only preserves the polish, but prevents it from chipping. All of these products are available at the Spa At Yellow Creek and are also used in their treatments. Michelle Bartilson-Sheley at Solaire Day Spa in Hudson (111 First Street, Hudson; 330-650-9095 or www.solairespa.com) says that natural and holistic products are popular and can benefit and calm the mind and body. Calming scents include summer citrus and eucalyptus with lavender, chamomile and cucumber. Hot stone massages are also gaining popularity, and expanding to include hands and feet, in addition to the body. These massages use smooth, heated rocks to loosen tight muscles. As far as nail polish colors, Bartilson-Sheley likes the Australia Collection by OPI. This includes colors like Brisbane Bronze, a bronzy golden brown, which follows the “gold is the new black” rule. (In addition, hot pink is the new red.) Other trendy shades include blues, oranges, the always-popular darks and metallics. OPI’s Night Brights offers options in a few of those categories. For darks, try My Private Jet, Light My Sapphire, and OPI Ink. Three lighter, shimmery options include Give Me The Moon, Golden Rules, and I Only Drink Champagne. Beauty editors from Vogue and Blueprint magazines give rave reviews to OPI’s Rinse Charming, a silver polish from the Don’t Do Dishes Collection.
